Lakeshore Drive Project
We had the initial preconstruction meeting for the Lakeshore Drive Improvements project. The low bidder is Hebert Construction from Iron River. They are also the contractor on Hancock’s streetscape project that will be finishing up this summer.

Hebert will be starting mid-May. Work will begin on the east end of the project from about the east side of the Dee to Isle Royale Street, so this won’t directly affect any of the business access for at least the initial part of the project. The main work for this section is new water and sewer. Lakeshore Drive east of Isle Royale Street will be “under construction” and blocked from through access pretty much from 15 May through the first week of June. Local traffic should be able to slip through here and there.

Their plan is to work east to west, so the next block will be from Isle Royale to Huron. We should expect that will take much of the rest of June as there are sidewalks and lights going in there too.

Those of you west of Huron Street should not see much construction activity until later in June. The whole project is supposed to be wrapped up at the end of August before the students return.

UPPCO, Semco, Charter, and Baraga Telephone will also be working on new lines at the same time. Hebert worked with them in Hancock and everything reportedly went fairly smooth coordinating the other utilities. There will probably be some outages as the old lines are taken out and the new ones go in. Those utilities will be working with you directly on scheduling those.

We will be having progress meetings weekly once construction starts and will be sharing news via email and memos which Marcy will drop off when on her parking rounds. We should have more details as things get closer. If you have any concerns about anything please call or email us.
